Over the years more body jewelry manufacturers have begun to produce substandard, economically efficient products. Unfortunately, along with the mass manufacturing of this “budget jewelry” comes many prices consumers pay in the long run.
First, the quality of metal is inferior. These cheap jewelry manufacturers use non-implant grade materials which are not suitable for fresh healing piercings. We use only materials that have been approved by the APP (Association of Professional Piercers). Internally threaded and certified metals are much more expensive to manufacture.
Second, budget jewelry has EXTERNAL threading which is on the post of straight, curved, and circular barbells. Imagine getting pierced with a smooth, sharp needle only to have it followed by a serrated pierce of jewelry which can scratch and tear new and healing piercings. Try taking that in and out on a regular basis. |

External threading on a barbell post is a sure sign of low-dollar craftsmanship. All of our jewelry is INTERNALLY threaded -threading that is hidden inside the post- never touching the piercing. Internally threaded barbells are only made by master machinists that dial in the perfect size. Ball compatibility and downsizing are more cost effective in the long run with internal threading as well.
There is an industry standard for internal threading that most high quality shops adhere to. This is convenient for those who travel or even move away from their entrusted piercing shop.
Finally, the finish of high quality jewelry should have a mirror-like sheen and be free of nicks, scratches, and polishing compounds. Holding both types of jewelry side by side tells all. Good jewelry shines. |
THE MALL/
BOUTIQUES/HEAD SHOPS
Be wary about purchasing jewelry from any store that does not specialize in body piercing. The majority of companies that produce the type of jewelry sold in these stores use non-implant grade materials, and externally threaded barbells. They are mass manufactured using the cheapest means possible. In addition, the employees of these stores are not body piercers and not qualified to give advice or insert your jewelry.
